How bird identification actually works
Beginners reach for colour first, which is reasonable but incomplete. Experienced birders run through a fixed mental checklist, and the order matters:

Use size comparisons, not inches
Almost nobody can judge inches on a bird in flight. Compare against three reference birds instead:

Why the same bird can look like two different birds
Two things trip people up constantly. The first is sex differences: a male Northern Cardinal is scarlet while the female is warm brown, and a male House Finch wears red the female never shows. If your bird looks like a drab version of something famous, it probably is the female. The second is season: American Goldfinches blaze yellow in summer and turn dull olive in winter, and European Starlings go from glossy purple-green to heavily white-spotted.
